Mumbai, Sept 4: A massive fire was reported on Tuesday morning in Mumbai's Malad region, a bustling business-cum-residential area of the city. At least 11 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse off the flames, local media reported.
The blaze reportedly broke out in Somwari Bazar area of Malad West, which houses an array of small business establishments. The fire-affected area is located close to the Bombay Talkies.
As per the update issued by news agency ANI at 11:48 am, the fire-fighting operation was underway. The flames were yet to be brought under control. No injuries were reported by the time this report was first published. However, significant damage to properties is expected.
Mumbai has been prone to fires erupting due to man-made causes, which experts attribute to the city's unplanned construction and lack of regulation by the civic authorities.
In a fire which broke out in Lower Parel's Crystal Tower last month, four people had died and nearly a dozen had suffered injuries.
On an average, the fire brigades in Mumbai collectively receive nearly 17,000 calls a year. Between 2010 and 2016, the fire brigade department had sent notices to 4,592 buildings in the city, mostly commercial, for flouting the safety norms.
