Mumbai, June 21: A major fire broke out at an under-construction warship of the Indian Navy at Mazgaon Dockyard in Mumbai on Friday. A person who was trapped died while he was being brought at the hospital. The under-construction warship 'Visakhapatnam' caught fire at 5:45 pm. Eight fire-fighting engines and several water tankers were at the spot to extinguish the blaze. There were no reports of casualties or injuries.

"Under-construction warship 'Visakhapatnam' caught fire at 5.44 pm. The blaze erupted on the second deck of the ship," P S Rahangdale, the chief of Mumbai fire brigade, told PTI. "Fire is confined to second and third deck of the warship. Fire-fighting operation is underway along with Dockyard fire-fighters. Smoke has spread in the warship,” Rahangdale added. Modi Government Begins Procedure For Building Submarines.

"One contract worker unfortunately succumbed possibly due to asphyxia and burn injury and another suffered minor burns. An inquiry has been constituted to ascertain the cause of the fire," said Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in a statement.

The cause of the fire will be ascertained after an inquiry. Mazgaon Dockyard is the only facility in India having capability to build submarines. Visakhapatnam, the largest warship of its class, was unveiled for construction in Mazgaon Docks in April 2015. It is the first of the four stealth guided missile destroyers to be built under Project 15-B Class.
