In 2017, a similar fire broke out in a slum near Bandra station (East) after a gas cylinder exploded during a demolition drive by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Garib Nagar. Reports inform that the fire had burned down 76 hutments and resulted in property loss of around Rs 10 lakh. A fire brigade report that came out later revealed that that fuel (possibly kerosene) was deliberately spread to set fire to the demolished debris.
