Mumbai, August 22: In the latest development in Crystal Tower fire, the Mumbai police has arrested the developer of Crystal Tower Abdul Razak Ismail Supariwala. The high rising building located in Mumbai’s Parel area caught fire this morning, killing four people and injuring 16 others. An FIR has been lodged under Section 304, 336, 337, 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 3(3) of Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Act 2006 against Supariwala.
The reports also surfaced that the building did not have Occupation Certificate (OC). The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had issued a notice in 2016 to the building's developer and its 58 occupants, but it was challenged in court. The notice was issued under section 353(a) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act. In the notice, The BMC asked the occupants to vacate the building. According to a civic official, the notice was challenged by the builder in the Shindewadi court here, and the matter is sub-judice.
Earlier in the day, at least four people have been killed while 16 others have been injured after a massive fire ripped the building. The fire erupted on the 12th floor of the building and spread rapidly to flats on the other upper floors. According to reports, the fire broke out due to short circuit.
