Mumbai, October 22: Though Mumbai is considered one of the safest cities in India for women, reports of crime against women are not rare. This time, in a deplorable case, a family in Mumbai's Virar area allegedly sold off their two daughters-in-law. According to reports, the family sold off the daughters-in-law after the women refused to fulfill the family's dowry demands. Two sisters in Mumbai's Virar locality, a far away suburb in Mumbai, were married to two brothers in a family living in Virar. According to a report in the Hindi daily Navbharat Times, the in-laws started troubling the sisters married in the family for dowry. They demanded a dowry of Rs 5 lakh from the the daughters-in-law. When the sisters refused to get Rs 5 lakh as demanded of them, the in-laws took them to Rajasthan and kept them there for some time. In September, the sisters were told to return to Mumbai to their homes along with an unknown person. The sisters were also tortured by their in-laws when they were in Rajasthan, said the police complaint.
When the train from Rajasthan reached Vasai station, the man told the sisters to get down at the station. When the sisters refused, an argument broke out between the sisters and the man, who claimed that the sisters had been sold to him for Rs 1.5 lakhs and left the scene.
The sisters then went to the Virar police station but the police allegedly refused to register a case for almost a month. It was only after the sisters approached a woman lawyer that a case was filed by the police and investigations started. One of the daughter-in-laws has also accused that the mother-in-law made her abort a two month old foetus.
