Mumbai, November 22: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided that the height of buildings in the heritage zone of Marine Drive won't be raised to 58 metres till the Supreme Court pronounces its verdict on a petition against the proposal. Currently, the height of buildings in the area is restricted to 24 metres. The BMC submitted an affidavit regarding this in the Bombay High Court which is hearing a public interest litigation filed earlier this year against the proposal. Mumbai: Marine Drive to Get Costliest Public Toilet on October 1, Know Whopping Price Here.

According to a report published in Mumbai Mirror, in the affidavit, the BMC said it would not implement the revised guidelines till the petition is pending in the apex court. In September, the BMC told the court that it would not implement the guidelines to raise the height of buildings to 58 metres and had not been given permission for redevelopment as per the new guidelines. Marine Drive Promenade Littered With Plastic Waste During High Tide, BMC Workers Clean the Garbage Within an Hour.

Last month, The SC refused the urgent hearing on the petition filed by Vasant Sagar Properties of Marine Drive to increase the height of its building. The civic body had also submitted its proposed guidelines in the top court. The BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta in 2016 proposed a recommendation that buildings along Marine Drive be allowed to be raised to 58 m. In the report submitted in the Supreme Court, he had suggested that buildings in the first row facing the sea should be allowed to rise upto 32 m, and the building behind could be 58 metres high.

Currently, the average height of existing buildings at Marine Drive is 21 metres. The heritage precinct extends from the National Centre for the Performing Arts in the south to Walkeshwar in the north.
