Hours after the four-storey building collapse in Mumbai's Dongri area, Mumbai's municipal body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) released a letter dated August 7, 2017 which had warned the residents of the dilapidated structure about the possibility of a collapse. The letter shows that the building was classified as "C1" and the municipal body had asked the building to be evacuated for demolition purpose. The structure that collapsed has been identified as Kesarbai Building and 15 families are reportedly trapped under the debris. The BMC's letter was tweeted by news agency ANIMumbai: Portion of Under-Construction Building Collapses in Nagpada.

On Tuesday, a four-storey building collapsed in Dongri area. A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was rushed to the building collapse site in Dongri. Rescue operations are underway as families and people are feared trapped in rubble.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday ordered an investigation in the case. "As per initial information I have received, around fifteen families have been trapped in the debris of the building collapse. The building is almost 100 years old, its residents had approached MHADA for the redevelopment of the building, we will launch an investigation to find out whether it was carried out or not,” Fadnavis told media persons here.
