The Bombay High Court on Friday put a stay on the construction of a casting yard for Bandra-Versova sea link on Juhu Koliwada beach.
Mumbai, January 26: The Bombay High Court on Friday stayed the construction of a casting yard for Bandra-Versova sea link on Juhu Koliwada beach. A bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice Nitin Jamdar while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PTI) by activist Zoru Bhathena restrained the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) from carrying out the construction work. In the petition, Bhathena said that MSRDC has begun dumping mud and illegally reclaiming the beach. It is also mentioned in the petition that 7.9 hectares at the southern end of Juhu beach, adjoining Koliwada, are also being destroyed. Senior lawyer Gayatri Singh, appearing for the petitioner. She told the court that the casting yard is being constructed in the middle of Juhu beach without the required permission. However, MSRDC’s counsel in the court claimed that it had all the requisite permissions for the project. The bench also directed authorities to file replies within two weeks. The court also directed the Santa Cruz police to make sure that no work should be carried out.
