Mumbai, October 26: In what can cause major embarrassment for the Maharashtra government, the speedboat which capsized off Colaba on its way to the proposed site of the Shivaji memorial on Wednesday, October 24, reportedly had no permit for sailing, said a report in The Times of India. This is the latest piece of news related to the boat capsizing that has cast a doubt as to the very presence of the boat in the sea. Earlier, there were questions raised on the route chosen by the captain of the ship to reach the proposed site of the Shivaji memorial and how the boat was carrying more people than its capacity. One person had died and the remaining 24 people were rescued after the boat mishap. The dead person has been identified as Siddesh Pawar, a 35-year-old Chartered Accountant who lived in Santacruz.
The Indian Coast Guard, Marine Police and other agencies had launched a major rescue maritime and aerial operation with two helicopters and managed to rescue all the people, except Siddesh Pawar. Pawar was found later and his body was sent to the hospital. He was declared dead on arrival. An enquiry has been initiated in the case after there were reports of overcrowding on the boat. But the subsequent revelations have been putting a big question mark on the safety and security measures adopted by the state government.
