Mumbai, August 2: In a move to go eco-friendly, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up cycle stands in locations such as railway stations and bus stands. For this, BMC has partnered with a private agency. This move is to encourage pollution-free transport for short distances. Meanwhile, Thane and Navi Mumbai has already introduced this initiative, Times of India reported. Hyderabad to Go Green: Cycle Rental Service Launched For Re 1 Per Half-an-Hour.

After the service is introduced, a commuter can download an application from Google play store or App Store, to rent a cycle and pay for it to travel. On reaching the destination, the cycle can be left at a nearby stand. The private agency has already begun a search for potentials spaces at Bandra-Kurla Complex for the cycle stands, Times of India reported.

The cycle-on-hire is a successful initiative in Navi Mumbai. Launched in November last year, the cycle-on-hire has recorded over 2.3 lakh rides with multiple increases in cycle stations. Starting with seven locations in Nerul, the concept has expanded in the entire city with 53 stands.

Cycle-on-hire is a common thing in several countries which focus on healthy and eco-friendly life. According to a London-based study, the cycle-on-hire concept has helped cities like Paris and Brussels to reduce pollution and battle congestions.
