The unions demand that there be a increase in prepaid fares, better parking facilities, and better understanding for drivers who struggle to find parking and end up paying high fines.
This comes after the Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union petitioned the government for a fare hike of Rs 2 in the base fare of autorickshaws in the suburbs due to certain factors like consumer price index and increased costs of vehicle maintenance, repair, insurance, and taxes.
Consumer rights activists have however opposed the fare hike pointing out that the cost of CNG has dropped multiple times this year. They suggest implementing a telescopic fare system instead. The transport authorities have not taken any decision in this regard yet.
