Mumbai Air Pollution: Air Quality Turns Unhealthy, Inches Towards 'Severe' Category in Nerul, Worli

Mumbai, December 11: Mumbai has been witnessing rising levels of air pollution since the last few days. The air quality in Mumbai on Wednesday remained unhealthy with air quality index (AQI) showing the reading at 223. In some areas across the city, the AQI was recorded in 'severe' category on Wednesday. According to details on the the website aqi.in, the air quality in Nerul in Navi Mumbai, Worli in South Bombay and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in Andheri-Vile Parle area was in 'severe' category with AQI at 311, 302 and 304 respectively.

While the national capital and several other states in North India continue to reel under severe air pollution, the air quality in Mumbai is also turning unhealthy. The AQI in Nerul region of Navi Mumbai was recorded at 311 at 1 PM n Wednesday, while the AQI in Worli was 302. At the CSIA, the air quality was plummeted to 304. An AQI between 0-50 is considered "good", 51-100 "satisfactory", 101-200 "moderate", 201-300 "poor", 301-400 "very poor" and 401-500 "severe". Meanwhile, the AQI above 500 falls in the "severe plus" category.

According to the website, the air quality in other area including Thane, Borivili, Kalyan, Powai and Bandra was in the poor category. Meanwhile, the air quality index in Colaba, Sion, Kurla, Mhape in Navi Mumbai was recorded in the 'unheathy' category. This year, Mumbai recorded the cleanest Deepavali in five years. The city entered the ‘poor’ category for the first time in the last week of November where the AQI recorded at 10 stations in Mumbai at 217, which is poor category during the day and AQI 202 in the evening.
