The Uttar Pradesh government had issued an official notification in June renaming the iconic Mughal Sarai Junction to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Railway Station.

The Uttar Pradesh government, in a letter sent to Governor Ram Naik, had said that it would be changing the station's name with immediate effect. The proposal to rename the British-era junction was moved in June 2017, after the BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017.

The Centre, had given its approval for renaming the station in the year 2017. The move had also faced opposition and the ruling party was accused of attempting to rewrite India's history and give precedence to RSS figures.

The Mughal Sarai Junction was built during the colonial rule in 1862. The station is a major stop between the Delhi-Kolkata route.

In a similar move, Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh has said in July that he has written to UP Governor Ram Naik to consider changing the name of Allahabad to Prayag.

The health minister also said that Governor Ram Naik, during his stint as Member of Parliament from Maharashtra had helped in changing the name of Bombay to Mumbai. Mumbai, earlier known as Bombay, had its named changed in the year 1995, when the Shiv Sena- BJP alliance formed a government in Maharashtra.
