Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019: Gujarat Government to Implement New Traffic Rules From October 15

Ahmedabad, September 18: Vijay Rupani-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat will implement the new Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) from October 15. Earlier this month, the Gujarat government slashed the penalties laid down by the Centre in the recently amended Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) by almost 90 percent. New Motor Vehicles Act: List of States Where Hefty Fines Are Not Enforced.

Reports had surfaced that the amended MVA which calls for a fine of Rs 1,000 for driving without wearing a helmet or seat belt, was reduced to Rs 500 in Gujarat. Similarly, the fine for obstructing a fire vehicle or ambulance which is Rs 10,000 in the Central act, was also reduced to Rs 1,000 in Gujarat. New Motor Vehicle Act Comes Into Force From September 1: Here's List of Stringent Rules And Penalties For Violating Norms.

Meanwhile, the states ruled by the Congress have not implemented the new act. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, was passed in Parliament in August during the recently concluded monsoon session. The bill was earlier introduced in the Lower House in August, 2016, but it lapsed after the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha.

After the implementation of the new traffic rules, the government faced flak from the opposition parties and public. Several reports of hefty fine being imposed on traffic violators surfaced across the country. In one such incident, a fine of Rs 2,00,500 was imposed on a truck driver for overloading in the national capital.
