Motor Vehicle Act 2019: Naveen Patnaik Relaxes Aggressive Overdrive for 3 Months After Public Outrage Over Hefty Fines

Bhubaneswar, September 9: With reports of hefty fines being imposed on drivers for violating traffic rules under the new amended Motor Vehicle Act, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced a relaxation on traffic enforcement for three months. Stating the reason for relaxation, Patnaik mentioned that the state government wants to give commuters the additional three months in hand to get their vehicle documents ready. He also directed the enforcement agencies not to go on an overdrive aggressively and asked the officials to handhold the public to facilitate compliance with the amended provisions of the Act.

To make the process swift and speedy, the Odisha CM asked the Transport Department to augment public services, strengthen the facilitation centres, open extra counters, conduct camps in public institutions. This additional time aims to sensitise the public on the new norms of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Earlier, reports arrived that Odisha minted Rs 88.90 lakh in just four days, highest among all states. After Odisha, the Haryana Government collected the second-highest fine amount of Rs 52.32 lakh by issuing 3,900 challans against traffic violators.
