Ranchi, July 5:  Jharkhand government has started investigating the allegations of child trafficking against the Missionary of Charity. The organisation is set up by Nobel laureate Mother Teresa. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has already launched an investigation after a couple filed a complaint against the organisation.

The couple approached the CWC after staffers at Missionaries of Charity took away an infant from them. According to a report published in India Today, the couple had paid Rs 1.2 lakh for the 14-day child. The police have detained a sister-in-charge for questioning. Two others have also been arrested in connection with the case.

The police accused them of selling the 14-day child of an inmate of a shelter home that is run by the Missionaries of Charity. One of the accused arrested by police has been identified as Anima Indwar. She was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Rupa Verma, the head of the Child Welfare Committee's Ranchi unit. Indwar worked at the office of the Missionaries of Charity, Nirmal Hriday.

In the complaint, the couple from Sonebhadra district of Uttar Pradesh alleged that the staffers at the organisation took away the child. The child was given to the couple on May 14. The couple also alleged that they even paid Rs 1.2 lakh to get custody of the child on May 1. According to the report, the couple was called by the staffer to revisit the Missionaries of Charity on July 1 for completing formalities, after the surprise check conducted by the CWC. Some documents were also seized from Nirmal Hriday.

The boy is presently under the custody of the child welfare department. As per the report, 13 more pregnant women staying at Nirmal Hriday have been moved to some other place by the CWC.
