Mumbai, September 16: This year witnessed the highest number of extreme rainfall events. Between June 1 and September 14, at least 1,422 people were killed because during monsoons. It is the highest number of deaths since the Union Home Ministry started compiling the data nine years ago.  In 2018, the figure stood at 1,379 – of which Kerala alone accounted for 498 deaths due to the floods that took place in the state. Mumbai Rains Record: City Receives 3,453 mm Rainfall During Monsoon 2019, Highest in 65 Years.

According to a Hindustan Times report, data recorded that close to 1,800 extreme rainfall events took place this monsoon, more than half of which was in August. The report further mentioned a few trends in this year's monsoon, like the bulk of showers shifted to August and the withdrawal of the monsoon got delayed by almost a fortnight

In an earlier report published last week, the date for the withdrawal of the monsoon was September 15 and September 20. Inspite of the late arrival of the rainfall this year, several parts of the country were flooded due to the continuous heavy rains that lashed several states.

In other news, a 65-year-old record was broken for the highest rainfall during this year’s monsoon in Mumbai. The city has received 3,453mm of rains between June and September 15. Before 2019, the maximum city received the all-time highest 3,452 mm rainfall in 1954, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell.
