Monsoon 2019 Update: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning For Marathwada and Vidarbha Regions in Maharashtra

Mumbai, October 7: Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds are likely to lash parts of Maharashtra in the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. In its weather bulletin, the IMD said Marathwada and Vidarbha regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunder on Friday and Saturday. Several parts of the state received heavy showers in the second half of Sunday, leaving some areas there water-logged. The IMD further informed that the monsoon is likely to begin its retreat from October 10, which is a delay of more than a month. This is the longest delayed withdrawal of monsoon recorded by the IMD. This year the monsoon was ‘above normal’ with the IMD recording precipitation of 110 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA). The LPA between 1961 to 2010 is 88 centimetres.
In its forecast, the IMD had said that due to likely formation of an anti-cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan at 1.5 kilometres above mean sea level around October 6, the withdrawal of southwest monsoon is likely to commence from northwest India around October 10.
The IMD in its release said that the western disturbance is currently affecting Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India. The weather associated with it is very likely to continue over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during next 24 hours. It said the isolated to scattered rainfall with isolated thunderstorm activity likely over western Himalayan region during the same period.
