Monsoon 2019: Rain Likely to Make Landfall in Kerala in Next 48 hours, Orange Alert Issued

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6: After a brief waiting, Monsoon is likely to make its landfall in Kerala with the next 48 hours. For this, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued an Orange alert, which means "be prepared", in Kollam and Alappuzha districts for June 9, while a Yellow Alert (heavy rain) is issued in seven districts for June 9 and in five districts on June 10. Monsoon 2019: IMD Predicts Nationwide 'Normal' Rainfall For June to September Period.

The showers are likely in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam among other cities in the next 48 hours. Earlier, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted that state will receive its first monsoon by June 6. Typically, a monsoon hits Kerala by June 1 with a standard deviation of seven days.

The Southwest monsoon in Kerala marks beginning if the rainy season in the state. As the monsoon progress, it moves forward towards North. Meanwhile, the monsoon in Mumbai, which typically arrives by June 10, is predicted in the third week of June. There an about ten days gap between the onset of monsoon in Kerala and Mumbai. Last year, showers started on June 9.
