Mumbai, June 10: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared a report stating that 180 locations in Mumbai face the risk of waterlogging. The confirmation from the civic body comes days before the onset of Monsoon in the city. The worst affected region is likely to be Matunga, where 15 spots have been identified.
In Bhandup and Malad, 12 places each have been identified as prone to waterlogging. 11 areas each in Mulund, Chembur, Chembur and Ghatkopar, 10 in Colaba and Bandra, 9 in Worli and 7 in Dadar have been tagged as those facing the risk of waterlogging. The BMC has planned measures to reduce the adverse effects of Monsoon suffered by Mumbai residents each year. The Water Supply Board and Electricity Department have been asked to tread cautiously in areas which are prone to waterlogging.
Over the past two months, the civic body has been prepping for the four-month rainfall season. Several nullahs have been de-congested, drainage pipes cleared and water pumps installed in low-lying areas.
The BMC draws flak each year in Monsoon as the waterlogging combined with damaged roads bring to the city to a halt. Several motorists are killed due to potholes on the road, whereas, instances of pedestrian deaths are also reported as they fall in open manholes.
