Mumbai, September 6: Panic engulfed Thane's Wagle Estate after a giant Monitor Lizard was spotted in the area. The female monitor lizard, which weighed 1.600 grams, was rescued by the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) personnel of the Thane Municipal Corporation on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at around 12:30 p.m. According to the Times of India report, the Monitor Lizard strayed in the Padwal Nagar area of Wagle Estate from neighbouring jungle. The locals mistook the reptile for a crocodile, resulting in widespread panic.

The report said the locals spotted the four-month-old and nearly 3.5-foot-long female monitor lizard in a drain at around 12 p.m. on Tuesday. "We received the information at the disaster management cell room at around 12:30 pm on Tuesday regarding a monitor lizard found in a small drain at Shafiq Compound behind Padwal Nagar in Wagle Estate in Thane. Soon after receiving the information the disaster management cell personnel along with the veterinary officer and forest department personnel reached the spot with one pick-up vehicle," Thane RDMC Chief Yasin Tadvi said. "The monitor lizard was rescued safely with the help of the disaster management cell, forest department and veterinary department personnel. It was been handed over to the forest department personnel," Tadvi added. Last month, a fox was seen roaming around in a residential area of Naupada in Thane. According to the reports, some people saw the rare golden fox in the Bhaskar Colony area. The team of the Wildlife Welfare Association arrived at the spot after being alerted and caught the animal.
