Guwahati, September 1: Hours after the 73-year-old doctor was beaten to death by a tea garden worker's family in Assam’s Jorhat district on Saturday, the state unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Assam Medical Service Association (AMSA) called for 24 hours strike as a mark of protest.  Only emergency services will not be withdrawn. The state police detained 21 people in connection with the case, reported Indian Express. The medical bodies will observe a candlelight procession to mourn the death of Dutta on Tuesday at 7 pm. Identified as Deven Dutta, the doctor was thrashed by the family of the 32-year-old tea garden worker Somra Majhi, who died during a treatment at a hospital. According to reports, Dutta was on a lunch break when Majhi died.   The 73-year-old doctor was then assaulted by the Majhi's relatives who blamed him for her death.

Dutta was shifted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment. The district administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter. Meanwhile, Assam Valley Consultative Committee of Plantation Associations (CCPA) has condemned the incident.
