New Delhi, September 18: A study has revealed that in power MLAs have an average income of Rs 24.59 lakhs, with those from Karnataka topping charts with average Rs 1.1 crore per annum and MLAs from eastern region earn the lowest at Rs 8.5 lakh annually.
The income analysis of legislators across the country released by Association for Democratic Reform (ADR) and the National Election Watch found that 203 MLAs from Karnataka earned the average salary of Rs 1.1 crore, whereas 63 MLAs of Chhattisgarh have the lowest average income average of Rs 5.4 lakh. The report further claimed that Gujarat MLAs who are illiterate or have a school level education are earning more that legislators who are graduates or with higher degrees. The average income of 63 graduate MLAs stood at Rs 14.37 lakh, while MLAs whose educational qualification ranges between 5th and 12th standard earned around Rs 19.83 lakh. 3 GFP MLAs, Independents Show Support to BJP in Goa.
Interestingly, the average income of four illiterate MLAs stood at Rs 74.17 lakh, which is much higher than earnings of those who are literates, the release said.
The MLAs under real estate business and Creative (acting) profession category, each cover only 1 per cent of the total MLAs examined, but they are among the top four highest paid profession categories with an average yearly income of Rs 39.69 lakh and Rs 28.48 lakh, respectively.
The average yearly income of 1,404 MLAs between 25-50 years was Rs 18.25, while 1,727 MLAs between 51-80 years was Rs 29.32. Shockingly, 11 MLAs aged between 81-90 years earned the highest, with the average salary of 87.71 lakh per annum.
The report also showed a huge gender disparity among MLAs with an average income of men more than double of the women.
