Mumbai, August 29: In a meeting chaired by president Ramesh Dube, the Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA) announced an INR 2 per litre hike in the wholesale price of buffalo milk, set for the next six months. The decision has increased the price of buffalo milk from an earlier INR 87 per litre to INR 89 per litre. The new rate of INR 89 per litre will be applicable from September 1, 2024.

The price change will reflect in all the 3,000 retailers selling buffalo milk in Mumbai. Given the increase in the wholesale price of buffalo milk, its retail price is also expected to shoot up. It could reach as far up as INR 93 per litre to INR 98 per litre, depending on the areas and their local demands. Price Hike in Buffalo Milk in Mumbai

The milk price hike in Mumbai has come ahead of the festive season in Maharashtra and the country, with festivals such as Ganeshotsav, Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali in these last few calendar months. This hike by the Mumbai Milk Producers Association would also lead to a price rise in all milk and milk-based products in the city. Although in force for the next six months as announced by the MMPA, the milk price hike could be extended, if need be, according to reports. The increase in milk prices is the second after almost a year in Mumbai. The last time the price of buffalo milk was raised by the MMPA, it made the wholesale rates rise to INR 87 per litre from the previous INR 85 per litre. The rising milk prices took a toll on the overall domestic budgets of the poor and middle-class families of the city. The current rise in wholesale milk prices, too, is expected to cause an impact to families, especially as it could increase the retail prices of milk and milk products alarmingly.
