Chilpancingo, October 8: The mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, Mexico, was tragically killed on Sunday, October 6, just six days after taking office. Alejandro Arcos, who recently assumed his role as mayor of the violence-plagued city of approximately 280,000 residents, was confirmed dead by the state’s governor.

Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the death of Chilpancingo Mayor Alejandro Arcos, stating, "His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation." The state attorney general's office has launched an investigation into his murder. Alfredo Cabrera Assassinated: Mayor Candidate in Mexico's Coyuca de Benitez Shot Dead at Point Blank Range, Murder Caught on Camera (Disturbing Video).

The confirmation of Arcos' death followed disturbing photos circulating on WhatsApp, allegedly showing a severed head on a pick-up truck, believed to be that of Arcos. The authenticity of the images could not be independently verified by Reuters. Arcos’ killing occurred just three days after the city government's secretary, Francisco Tapia, was also murdered. "They were young and honest officials who sought progress for their community," wrote Senator Alejandro Moreno on social media, mourning the loss of both officials. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo Swears-In As Mexico’s First Woman President (Watch Video).

Alejandro Moreno, leader of Mexico's PRI political party, urged the federal attorney general's office to take over the investigation into the murders of Alejandro Arcos and Francisco Tapia, citing "the situation of ungovernability in Guerrero." Guerrero has become one of the most dangerous states for both public officials and journalists, with increasing violence against those in these roles.

In the weeks leading up to Mexico's June 2 elections, the state witnessed the tragic killings of at least six candidates for public office. Recently, Alejandro Arcos has been active on social media, showcasing his involvement in disaster relief efforts following Hurricane John's devastating flooding in Acapulco and neighbouring towns last month. His commitment to serving the community highlights the profound loss felt after his untimely death.
