Met Declares Formation of Cyclone ‘Fani’ Over Southeast Bay of Bengal; Likely to Intensify Into a Severe Cyclonic Storm

IMD said that there was a deep depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal. The depression intensified into cyclone 'Fani', it is lying at 1250 km south-East of Chennai and expected to intensify into a severe storm and move northwest towards south Andhra Pradesh by April 30.

Chennai, April 27: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that there was a deep depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal. The depression intensified into cyclone 'Fani', it is lying at 1250 km south-East of Chennai and expected to intensify into a severe storm and move northwest towards south Andhra Pradesh by April 30. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to Receive Heavy Rainfall in Coming Days, IMD Warns of Cyclonic Storm.

The IMD bulletins suggested that the severe cyclone 'Fani', pronounced as Foni, would intensify to become a very severe cyclone and spare the North Tamil Nadu coast. The cyclone is very likely to move northwestwards off Sri Lanka coast during next three days and reach north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts on April 30 evening. Monsoon Prediction: Brace For Below Normal Rains This Year, Says Skymet Weather Forecast.

Speaking to media at the Regional Meteorological Centre, IMD, Chennai, Deputy Director General S Balachandran said, "Today there was deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal. It intensified into a cyclonic storm, it is lying at 1250km south-east of Chennai, expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and move northwest towards south AP by 30 April."

The IMD bulletin stated that the sea condition is likely to be very rough and become high over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean from today. “Sea conditions very likely to be rough to very rough along & off Puducherry, Tamilnadu and south Andhra Pradesh Coasts from 29th April to 1st May 2019,” states the bulletin.

Fisherfolks are advised to not venture into the deep-sea area of the southeast Bay of Bengal and Indian Sea on April 27 and 28; over the southwest Bay of Bengal on 28; along with and off Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts from 29th April to 1st May. Those who are in the deep sea are advised to return by Sunday.
