Lucknow, Sept 27: In another disturbing incident from Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, a youth was beaten up by a mob on allegation of "love jihad". The identity of the victim was yet to be ascertained by the time this report was published.

According to a scribe who shared the video on Twitter, the youth is a medical college student who was beaten up in front of police personnel. Love jihad has emerged as a major political issue in Uttar Pradesh, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) using it as a poll plank ahead of the assembly elections in 2017.

After the BJP government was formed, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had constituted anti-romeo squad, which were tasked to prevent girls from eve-teasers. Reports, however, claimed the anti-romeo tasks were also involved in harassing unmarried couple spending time together with consent.
