In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a private hospital in Thanjavur allegedly charged a family from Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district for three days of medical treatment to their kin after his death.
Chennai, September 30: In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a private hospital in Thanjavur allegedly charged a family from Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district for three days of medical treatment to their kin after his death. According to a report published in Hindustan Times, Subhash, son of the 55-year-old deceased N Sekar filed a complaint in Thanjavur south police station. Sekar had suffered from stomach pain on September 9. After which he was admitted to a local hospital at Nagapattinam.
The doctor of the local hospital referred him to a private hospital in Thanjavur. The deceased was taken to the hospital in Thanjavur on September 10. According to the report, the hospital charged the family Rs 5 lakh for his medical expenses and further they asked us to pay Rs 3 lakh to continue the treatment on Friday. Subhash in its complaint mentioned that they when they shifted Sekar to a government hospital, the doctors there told the family that he died at least three days before. The post-mortem report of the deceased is still to come. Police assured of taking proper action against the hospital authorities if the allegation is true. According to the report, Vinoth Kumar, administrative officer of the private hospital, denied the allegation. He claimed that the family of the deceased is trying to defame the hospital. Kumar also said that they had filed defamation suits in a local court against this.
It is not the first incident of medical apathy, earlier in June, a 60-yr-old man from Haryana's Panipat, who was declared dead by doctors at Delhi's Ganga Ram hospital, was later found alive while being taken for last rites in an ambulance. Relatives of the man accused the doctors of negligence in performing their duty. In another such incident in June only, a government hospital in Maharashtra handed the dead body of a 50-year-old patient Avinash Dadasaheb Bagwade to his family. But later it was found that the hospital authorities handed over the wrong dead body, whereas, Bagwade was alive and responding to treatment in the Sangli civil hospital.
