Medical Apathy in Jharkhand: 4-Month-Old Pregnant Woman Denied Ambulance, Taken to Hospital on Bike
A four-month-old pregnant woman on Wednesday was brought to Chandwa Community Health Centre on a motorbike allegedly due to unavailability of an ambulance. However, Civil Surgeon of the district said that if the family of the patient had called for an ambulance then they should have waited for it.
Ranchi, June 28: In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a four-month-old pregnant woman on Wednesday was brought to Chandwa Community Health Centre on a motorbike allegedly due to unavailability of an ambulance. The 30-year-old Shanti Devi was in an unconscious condition and was profusely bleeding when she was taken to the health centre by his family members. The woman had to travel for 10 km on the bike, reported Hindustan Times. The medical staff at the health centre referred her to the Latehar Sadar hospital. However, this time, she was provided an ambulance. Adding to her ordeal, doctors there again referred her to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi. Shanti Devi’s husband Kamal Ganjhu told Hindustan Times, “We tried to arrange for an ambulance to bring her to Chandwa CHC, but the latter did not provide us the same. We also called the 108 helpline number, but in vain. Meanwhile, S Sharma, Civil Surgeon, Latehar District said that if the family of the patient had called for an ambulance then they should have waited for it. He stated, “They had asked for an ambulance but didn't wait for it to reach them, brought the woman to the hospital on a motorbike. If you've called for an ambulance then you should wait for it.” The family belongs to Chatuag village in Chandwa block in Latehar district.
