New Delhi, April 4: The use of tobacco among school children and adolescents is reaching pandemic levels. According to reports, nearly 82,000–99,000 children all over the world begin smoking every day. The program will start on Thursday, April 4, and will be carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO) and public health personnel of Delhi civic body. Despite the tobacco products are banned in educational institutions within the radius of 100 metres, it is still found near some schools and colleges. "A training of nodal teachers of schools in Delhi will start from Thursday to spread awareness about the hazards of smoking and rules under the provision of Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA)," Pramod Verma, deputy health officer at MCD told to India Today.

According to a recent study, more than 6 lakh children and adoloscents in India smoke cigarettes every day. Every week, Tobacco consumptions claim nearly 17,887 lives in the country.
