Matunga Station FOB Closed for Pedestrians Reported to Be in Dangerous Condition After Cracks Were Reported
By barricading the bridge, the authorities may have averted an Andheri ROB-like tragedy from taking place.
Mumbai. July 18: The Matunga foot overbridge (FOB) has been closed for pedestrians from the past two weeks after it developed cracks and has been reported to be in a dangerous condition. So, the Mumbai civic body has closed the bridge as a precautionary measure according to a tweet by the ANI. Earlier, a portion of Gokhale road overbridge (ROB) of Andheri collapsed, claiming one life and leaving four other severely injured.
The incident helped focus the attention of the authorities about the rickety bridges in the city, and so the railway minister Piyush Goyal, who was also in the city during that time, initiated an inquiry. Besides this, the civic body has also sought help from Information Technology Institue -Bombay (IIT-B) to inspect the FOB, ROB and other bridges of the city.
Here is the tweet of ANI of Matunga FOB closed for Pedestrians:
Ashok Khairnar, the assistant municipal commissioner of the ward, where the Matunga FOB comes under, was quoted as saying, "We directed our staff and also the bridges department to inspect the structure and till we get the report, the FOB will be closed." To stop the pedestrians from taking the FOB, barricades have been put up. The FOB is connected to the Matunga railway station and is used by many commuters to reach to the railway platform. By barricading the bridge, the authorities may have averted an Andheri ROB-like tragedy from taking place.
