Srinagar, July 16: In the biggest ever mass wedding in the Kashmir valley, a total of 105 couples from different districts of the valley tied the knot in Srinagar on Sunday. The function took place at the Amar Singh Club. Many locals also attended the function to become a part of the noble cause. The Jafria Council arranged the mass wedding. It is a religious and social organisation.
The council provides monetary support to financially weak couples. The council’s Secretary Gulam Rasool told reporters that couples register with the organisation and after verifying their credentials and antecedents to find out whether they deserve monetary and social support. Musadiq Hussain, chairman of the council, told Hindustan Times, “Many of our youngsters are crossing the marriageable ages because they are not able to fulfil the societal customs or give dowry.”
Hussain also said that his organisation had palns to finally move to the district headquarters so that the couples were identified and supported. The council also provided marriage dresses, some ornaments for the brides and other facilities to the couples who got married on Sunday. According to Hussain, in 2015, 38 couples tied the knot, while 70 couple tied the knot in 2016 and 75 in 2017.
