The incident took place outside Sureer police station in Mathura on Wednesday morning. According to a report, the couple's son recorded their self-immolation attempt on a mobile phone and the video is widely shared on social media. A local strongman, identified as Satyapal, was allegedly harassing Jugendra and his family. Jugendra and his wife had visited Sureer police station several times seeking action against Sataypal. They had alleged that police inspector Deepak Nagar has links with Satyapal and that's why the police were not taking any action. In the video of the incident, the man and woman are seen setting themselves on fire. A cop rushes to douse the flames with a blanket. Soon after, another policeman rushes with a blanket to help the couple. The two were rushed to a hospital in a critical state and are currently undergoing treatment. Their son can be heard crying in the background. According to a News18 report, no senior police officer was present when the couple attempted self-immolation.
Following the incident, ADG of Agra zone Ajay Anand suspended police inspector Deepak Nagar who reportedly already has several complaints against him. An investigation has also been launched into the incident. Minister Shrikant Sharma has also assured investigation and strict action against the culprits.
