'Maratha Students to Get 16% Reservation in PG Medical College Admissions': Maharashtra Legislature Passes Amendment
Both the houses of Maharashtra Legislature on Friday passed an Amendment in Socially Economically Backward Class (SEBC Act). Under this amendment, students of the Maratha community in Post Graduate Medical Admission will get 16 percent reservation.
Mumbai, June 21: Both the houses of Maharashtra Legislature passed an Amendment in Socially Economically Backward Class (SEBC Act) on Friday. Under this amendment, students of the Maratha community in Post Graduate Medical Admission will get 16 percent reservation. However, after students from the open category moved the Bombay High Court and the reservation was scrapped. In May, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court had said that the 16 percent reservation for the Maratha community under the SEBC category will not be applicable for the PG medical courses this year. Last month, the state government had received permission from the Election Commission (EC) to promulgate an ordinance for Maratha reservation for the PG medical courses. The ordinance was promulgated to restore the .admissions already done.
Last Year, protests were held across Maharashtra against the delay by the government in taking a decision of the topic of reservation for the Maratha community. Protests led by Maratha Kranti Morcha Coordination Committee turned violent in certain places in Navi Mumbai, especially Koparkhairne.
