Maratha Reservation Gets Green Signal From Devendra Fadnavis Government in Maharashtra
Based on the recommendations of the Backward Class Commission, the government created a new category SEBC (socially and economically backward) to pave way for the Maratha reservation.
Mumbai, November 18: The Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Sunday gave its nod to reservation for Maratha community in government jobs and educational institutions. A bill in this regard is likely to be tabled in the winter session of the assembly. Based on the recommendations of the Backward Class Commission, the government created a new category SEBC (socially and economically backward) to pave way for the Maratha reservation.
The government reportedly said that reservation can be provided over and above the prescribed 50 per cent under certain provisions of Article 15 of the Constitution. "We received Backward Class Commission's report with three recommendations. Independent reservation will be given to Maratha community in SEBC. We constituted a Cabinet Sub-committee to take statutory steps for implementing the recommendations," Devendra Fadnavis said. Maratha Reservation Demand Should Be Decided Without Touching Existing Quotas: Pawar.
Earlier this month, the Backward Class Commission submitted its report on social and economic conditions of the Maratha community and made favourable recommendations on the demands for reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to them, without disturbing the quota granted to Other Backward Classes (OBC).
The chief minister had earlier said that Maratha community would get the reservation in the government jobs and in admissions in academic institutions from December 1. In July this year, the government had announced 16 per cent reservation for the Marathas in 72,000 government jobs which was later stayed following protests.
