Mumbai, August 4: Two more people committed suicide on Friday allegedly over Maratha quota issue just a day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured the community to grant quota. Fadnavis also reiterated his government’s commitment to resolving the issue. According to reports,, Umesh Atmaram Indait, 22, a resident Aurangabad’s Chikalthana area, allegedly hanged himself in his house in the city’s Choudhary Colony. Thirty-four-year-old Dattatrey Tukaram Shinde, a resident of Purandar in Pune district, reportedly jumped in front of a train at the Daundaj railway station.
The police have found the suicide notes allegedly written by both the deceased. They have blamed the government for delay in granting reservation to the Maratha community. Till now, six people have committed suicide over the issue. According to a report published by The Hindu, A suicide note allegedly written by Indait mentions unemployment as the cause behind committing suicide. The note reads, “I could not fulfil the dreams of my parents. I am jobless even after completing my B.Sc.”
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said that his government would provide reservation to Marthas in accordance with law. After holding a meeting with state leaders from diverse sections, Fadnavis said, "A joint statement has been signed to give reservation to Marathas lawfully. State Government stands in absolute support for Maratha Reservation, and we are following a requisite process to do it at the earliest."
The Maratha communities have been agitating across the state demanding reservation in government jobs and education. On July 24, Maratha groups had called for a complete Maharashtra Bandh. The Maratha Kranti Morcha Coordination Committee had declared a Maharashtra Bandh. The government will also take back cases registered against people participating in the protest. However, the serious cases like attacking police personnel, indulging in arsoning etc. will not be taken back.
