Manohar Parrikar Health Update: Goa CM Flown to Delhi for Treatment at AIIMS
This comes days after Parrikar returned from his second visit to the United States of America, where he is being treated at a New York-based medical facility for pancreatic ailments.
Panaji, Sept 15: Reeling under prolonged illness, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar reached Delhi today where he is being admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
This comes days after Parrikar returned from his second visit to the United States of America, where he is being treated at a New York-based medical facility for pancreatic ailments.
The Goa CM has reportedly conveyed to BJP president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his "inability to continue as the Chief Minister". Owing to poor health, Parrikar, in a telephonic conversation, told Shah to look for his replacement.
According to a Goa BJP leader, Shah and Modi have asked Parrikar to continue as the CM till the party explores other alternatives. As an immediate measure, he is likely to be relieved of key portfolios.
"Parrikar spoke to Shah and briefed him about the political situation in the state, and also informed him about his health condition. It was decided that Parrikar will continue as the chief minister but he might give some of his portfolios to his cabinet colleagues," the BJP leader was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Apart from Parrikar, two other cabinet ministers in the Goa government - Pandurang Madkaikar and Francis D'Souza - are likely to be relieved of their charges due to deteriorating health. Both the leaders are currently hospitalised.
Parrikar's ouster can impact the stability of the BJP-led government in Goa, which stands on a paper-thin majority. The two major allies - Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and Goa Forward Party - had extended support to the BJP in 2017 only on the condition that Parrikar would lead the coalition.
