Mumbai, August 12: A man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and murder of his wife in 2015. District judge P P Jadhav on Saturday convicted Mukesh Bhandaree (31), from Koviligaon in Kalyan, in the case. The judge, besides awarding him life imprisonment, fined him Rs 60,000.

Mukesh had allegedly raped the victim, a resident of Kalyan. He was booked under sections 376, 420, 312, 313, 504, 506 and 323 of IPC, but managed to get a bail. On April 12, 2015, he married the victim after much persuasion, reported the Times of India.

On the night of June 9, 2015, Mukesh and the victim (his wife) left the house of her parents in an SUV. However, he later informed her parents that his wife had left the home in anger. But his wife didn’t reach her parents’ house and the family filed a missing person complaint. Her body was later found in bushes in Yewari village, Bhiwandi.

It was revealed that Mukesh had assaulted his wife, with two stumps and smashed her body beyond recognition and thrown it.

“From these background facts, it is clear there was a strong motive for the accused to commit murder of his wife. On the fateful night, he was with Amisha after 8.30pm. Under such circumstances, the subsequent behaviour to pretend to help in the search of Amisha and his physical condition clearly establishes his involvement,” the judge observed while convicting Mukesh.
