Kolkata, August 5: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has wished people on the occasion of Friendship Day. Banerjee tweeted to extend her wishes. In the tweet, she wrote, “All our friends are our neighbours. All our neighbours are our friends. Not just for a day, but for every day of the year.” Her tweet also drew flak on social media. Netizens trolled her for opposing National Register of Citizens (NRC). People have also taken a dig at the chief minister and alleged her of giving shelter to Rohingyas and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
Banerjee has strongly criticised the NRC list released by the Assam government and accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of vendetta politics ahead of 2019 general elections. She termed it as a conspiracy against minorities. The Chief Minister, while speaking at an event on July 31 had said that there will be "civil war and bloodbath" in the country if the issue of the Assam citizen's list is not solved.
On August 3, the delegation of TMC)led by West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim was detained by the Assam Police at Silchar airport. The delegation arrived in Assam to assess the ground situation following the release of NRC. The Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Nath prohibited the delegation from entering the district.
The final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) Assam was published on July 30 for the state. The central government said that people who are not part of the NRC final draft would not be automatically declared foreigners. Assam government published the first draft of the NRC on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1.
