New Delhi, September 4: Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat on Tuesday has reiterated that Major Leetul Gogoi will be dealt severely in the court-martial proceedings according to charges levelled by the court of inquiry against him. Talking to reporters, he said, “I had clearly said that any case of moral turpitude and corruption would be dealt with sternly. A court of inquiry has been conducted which has recommended that we should go in for court-martial proceedings for whatever he has been found guilty of.”

The Chief of Army Staff also said that Major Gogoi would be punished according to the crime he has committed. Earlier in May also Gen Rawat promised an exemplary punishment to Major Leetul Gogoi if he was found guilty of any offence. On May 23, along with Territorial Army man Sameer Ahmed Mall and a local girl were detained by Jammu and Kashmir Police following an altercation at the Hotel Grand Mamta as the staff refused to let her in. After questioning Major Gogoi and Malla were handed over to their unit, while the girl was handed over to her maternal uncle.

A court-martial was ordered against him as Court of Inquiry (CoI) ordered against him finding that he has violated army’s rule. According to official sources, the Indian Army officer has violated standard operating procedure by staying away from his place of duty without informing anybody and developing a relationship with a woman in a conflict zone.

Major Gogoi shot to fame last year after tying a local Kashmiri Farooq Ahmed Dar to a bonnet of his jeep in Budgam district in an attempt to save his convoy from stone-pelters. He was later awarded the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation card for his act.
