Meerut, June 18: The last rites of Major Ketan Sharma were performed at his residence in Meerut on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, his mortal remains were brought to Air Force Station Palam in New Delhi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army chief General Bipin Rawat paid last respects to the martyred Indian Army officer. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over his death. Major Sharma was martyred on Monday in an encounter with terrorists in the Achabal area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district. Two soldiers were also injured in the gunbattle. Meanwhile, security forces neutralised one terrorist. The joint operation was conducted by 19 Rashtriya Rifles, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Major Sharma was born on October 4, 1987. He joined the Sikh Light Infantry as a Lieutenant in 2012 after passing out from the Indian Military Academy Dehradun. The officer was married to Ira Mandar Sharma six years ago and the couple has a three-year-old daughter Kiara.
