Maitri Bridge in Leh, Longest Suspension Bridge Build Over Indus River, Thrown Open to Public; Here's All You Need to Know

Leh, April 2: The 260-feet 'Maitri Bridge' in Choglamsar village of Leh in Jammu & Kashmir State was thrown open for public on Monday. The bridge, which is believed to be the longest suspension bridge over the Indus river, has been constructed by Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army in a record time of 40 days. The bridge has been named 'Maitri Bridge', as it symbolises the excellent civil-military relations existing in the Leh-Ladakh region.

An 89-year-old war veteran, Naik Phunchok Angdus (Retd) dedicated a Cable Suspension Bridge to people of the region. Here's All You Need to Know About the Maitri Bridge in Leh Region:

  1. The bridge was constructed by the combat engineers (Sahas aur Yogyata Regiment) of the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army in a record time of 40 days, ferrying almost 500 tons of equipment and construction material.
  2. This comes after civil administration directed the Army to build a bridge to help the locals of Choglamsar, Stok and Chuchot villages (largest villages of Ladakh Region) in their commute.
  3. According to reports, the cable suspension bridge has been built using innovative engineering methods.
  4. The bridge was inaugurated by senior Ladakhi war veterans in the presence of Lt Gen YK Joshi, AVSM, VrC, SM, General Officer Commanding ‘Fire and Fury Corps’.

Meanwhile, locals of the area thanked the Army for constructing the bridge, which, they say, has brought much-needed relief to the people of the region. According to reports, the Army undertook the building the bridge after several  requests from the civil administration to help the locals of the three largest villages in the area- Choglamsar, Stok and Chuchot- which are the largest villages of Ladakh region.
