The miscreants also wrote "anti-national" on a picture of Mahatma Gandhi that was put up on a hoarding-like structure inside the Bapu Bhawan. The robbery came to light when Rewa district Congress chief Gurmeet Singh, along with party workers, reached Laxman Bagh, which houses the Bapu Bhawan, to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 which is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. "This appears to be the handiwork of those who love Nathuram Godse, the killer of Gandhi. This hatred must immediately stop and police should move swiftly to identify and nab the culprits," Singh told India Today. A case has been registered under Sections 153 B, 504 and 505 of the Indian Penal Code, said Superintendent of Police Abid Khan.
"Congress district president Gurmeet Singh Mangu lodged a complaint with police that some anti-social elements tried to deface the Mahatma Gandhi’s poster at Bapu Bhawan on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. They also wrote ‘Rashtradrohi’ with a green ink on the poster," Additional Superintendent of Police Shiv Kumar Verma was quoted as saying.
Tension prevailed in the area after the incident, prompting police to deploy additional forces. Locals expressed shocked at how miscreants entered the Bapu Bhawan and performed their misdeed without being noticed.
