Pune, August 6: Due to the flood-like situation following incessant rains, Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced that all educational institutes will remain shut in Sangli, Satara and Kolhapur districts tomorrow. The administration also declared a holiday in schools and colleges in five Tehsils of Pune and five Tehsils of Raigad districts for tomorrow.
Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and their surroundings have been witnessing heavy rainfall since the past five days leading to waterlogging and a flood-like situation in many cities, towns and villages. More than 10,000 people were rescued to safer locations from Pune, Sangli and Satara. Over 9,000 people from Kolhapur district were evacuated and shifted to safer locations. The Panchganga River was flowing above danger levels, while electricity generation had to be stopped temporarily at the overflowing Radhanagari Dam. Thousands of people in several villages in Shirol, Hatkanangale, Chikhali, Ambewadi were severely hit besides the erstwhile royal city of Kolhapur, and normal life completely paralysed as incessant rains continued on Tuesday. Earlier today, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh seeking help to expedite flood rescue and relief efforts. Fadnavis has also called a Cabinet meeting tomorrow in Mumbai to review the flood situation in the state, particularly in Kolhapur and Sangli districts.
"Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke to Union Minister Rajnath Singh seeking help and support with coordination and for expediting flood rescue and relief efforts through various agencies like NDRF, Indian Air Force, India Coast Guard, Army in Kolhapur and Sangli districts," officials from the Chief Minister’s Office said.
