Maharashtra Rains: 27 Deaths Reported Due to Wall Collapse, 18 Dead in Malad, 3 in Kalyan, 6 in Pune
22 people were killed in three separate cases of wall collapse in Maharashtra. Out of the 22, 16 were reported from Mumbai and Kalyan after heavy rains hit the metropolis and areas around.
Mumbai, July 2: Nearly 27 people were killed in Maharashtra on a single day on Tuesday in wall collapse incidences. The casualties were reported from Mumbai's Malad and Kalyan area while several others were killed in Pune. In Malad, at least 18 people were killed and over 20 were injured after a wall collapsed on hutments in Malad's Pimpripada area in Mumbai on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall. According to a tweet by ANI, many were feared trapped under the debris. The injured ones were rushed to the nearby hospitals. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who were crushed to death after a wall collapsed in Malad area of the city. "Pained to know about the loss of lives in Malad Wall Collapse incidence. My thoughts are with families who lost loved ones & prayers for speedy recovery of injured. Rs 5 lakh will be given to the kin of deceased," Fadnavis tweeted.

Heavy rainfall continued to lash Mumbai even on Tuesday, crippling normal life across the city. Another wall collapse incident was reported from Kalyan area, where three people died while one was injured after wall of National Urdu School collapsed at around 12:30 am on Tuesday following heavy rainfall in the area.

Monsoon may have made a delayed entry into the city but its intensity has been strong in the past few days. In Pune, as many as six people have lost their lives after a wall collapse in the wee hours of Tuesday. According to reports, the wall of Sinhgad College in Ambegaon collapsed at around 1:15 am today on Tuesday, resulting in casualties.

In wake of the extremely heavy rainfall forecast by the IMD, the Government of Maharashtra, has declared a public holiday on 2nd July as a precautionary measure for Mumbai city and its citizens. Several parts of Mumbai received over 200mm rainfall in the 24 hours till Tuesday with the Met department predicting showers to persist till at least Wednesday.
