Nagpur, Sep 4: Three youths allegedly killed a policeman after he shouted at them for loitering late at night. The incident took place at Achalpur in Amravati district of Maharashtra in the wee hours Tuesday. The assailants came on a bike and hit assistant sub-inspector Shantilal Patel with an iron rod. The accused, identified as Kedar Sarkate, Nayan Mandle and Milan Kholapure were drunk, and have since been arrested.
Shantilal Patel was part of a police patrol team that reprimanded the youths for loitering near bus stand around 2 am. They left the place but later returned abusing the police for not allowing them to move freely, Amravati Superintendent of Police Dilip Zalke told the Indian Express. While other police officers had left by then, the youths found Patel who was on his way back home on his motorcycle.
The three assailants stopped him and allegedly hit him with an iron rod. Patel was taken to a hospital where he died during treatment. “They said they just wanted to hit his bike, but the rod landed on his head,” Zalke was quoted as saying. Notably, the police had taken prohibitive action against Kedar Sarkate to prevent trouble during Ganesh festival. All the accused are in their early twenties.
