Amravati, January 23: More Than 15 police officials were injured on Tuesday after a violent fight with tribal villagers who had been recently rehabilitated in Amravati district of Maharashtra, reported news agency ANI. The incident happened in Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR), where police officials were posted to flush out villagers from returning to their old village. The unexpected attack at cops came around 3 pm on Tuesday as the officials were pursuing the villagers to move out to the rehabilitated village on the instructions of state government. When cops urged villagers to leave the location they became reluctant and suddenly turned violent and started pelting stones on cops and forest officials. "People from Melghat villages were rehabilitated in Akot village by the state government a few days ago. However, unsatisfied with their demands not being met by the state government, they decided to go back to their Melghat villages and started moving on January 15," the official said.
The injured cops and forest staffers have been shifted to government and private hospitals at Amravati, Akot and Akola. Meanwhile, the attack was strongly condemned by the Forest Rangers Association of Maharashtra (FRAM) who demanded strict action against villagers.
