Maharashtra Floods: NCP Likens State BJP Government to General Dyer For Imposing Section 144 in Flood-Hit Kolhapur

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Maharashtra for imposing section 144 in the flood-affected Kolhapur. District authorities have started rescue operation in Kohlapur as floodwater started to recede.

Mumbai, August 12:  The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Maharashtra for imposing section 144 in the flood-affected Kolhapur. District authorities have begun relief operation in Kohlapur as floodwater started to recede. NCP Mumbai spokesperson Nawab Malik alleged by imposing section 144, the government wanted to suppress voices of the people who were angry against it., reported Mumbai Mirror. "State BJP chief shows arrogance to farmers, and on the other hand, the government also imposes section 144 in the flood-affected region from August 12 to 24," reported Mumbai Mirror quoting Malik as saying. The government also faced criticism after pictures of Devendra Fadnavis were seen on relief material.

Meanwhile, the government on Monday re-opened National Highway (NH) 4 for heavy vehicles and SUVs at Kolhapur-Sangli Phata as the situation has started to improve In several parts of Maharashtra, including Sangli, Kolhapur, Raigad, Satara have floods have wreaked havoc, throwing normal life out of gear. According to reports,  around 75,000 flood-affected people, including 66,000 from the worst affected Kolhapur and Sangli districts were evacuated to safer places.
