Maharashtra Floods: Educational Institutes to Remain Shut in Kolhapur, Parts of Pune And Sangli Tomorrow
Authorities declared a holiday in all schools and colleges in Kolhapur district, three tehsils of Pune district and five tehsils of Sangli district for tomorrow.
Pune, August 7: All educational institutes in Kolhapur district and parts of Pune and Sangli districts will remain shut tomorrow due to flood following heavy rainfall in the western parts of Maharashtra. Authorities declared a holiday in all schools and colleges in Kolhapur district, three tehsils of Pune district and five tehsils of Sangli district for tomorrow.
The flood situation remained grim in Kolhapur and Sangli districts on Wednesday following incessant rains. As many as seven death have been reported in rain- and flood-related incidents. So far 1,32,360 people have been evacuated to safer places. In Sangli and Kolhapur, over 53,000 and 51,000 people were evacuated, respectively, followed by 13,000 in Pune district. On Wednesday, four National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Goa reached Maharashtra to carry out relief and rescue operations. The state government has written to the Centre urging them to send ten more teams for rescue and relief operations. The region is likely to witness more rainfall in the coming days which further deteriorate the situation. "All the dams in the region are overflowing and the Met department has predicted continuous rains for the next three to four days. So if the catchment areas of dams receive more rain, possibility of more floods can not be ruled out," said Dr Deepak Mhaisekar, divisional commissioner, Pune.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the flood situation at a meeting in Mumbai. He told reporters later that the state received 104 pc of average rain during June-August period, most of it in western Maharashtra and Konkan.
