Mumbai, August 21: With Maharashtra reeling under flood and reports circulating that over 1,000 milch animals died, owner of the Amul brand stated that it is mitigating milk production shortages by redirecting supply from other states to high demand areas like Mumbai.
Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) RS Sodhi informed, as reported by Business Standard, that Amul is currently procuring milk from Gujarat and other parts of Maharashtra to meet the additional demand of Mumbai. He also informed that Amul has not raised the Milk prices and is not planning for it. Sodhi had said, as the daily quotes, "We are supplying 1.9-2 million litres of milk to Mumbai and Pune and have increased supply by 0.5 million litres. There is no supply shortage as of now. If the need arises, we are ready to supply more."
Not only Amul, but other milk suppliers like Gokul and Warna too were affected due to the fodder shortage and transportation hurdles. In Mumbai and Pune, there is a requirement of six million and 2.5 million litres daily. This situation has occurred after incessant rains caused a massive loss to the state exchequer.
